Salford Mayor Referendum – Yes or No? My thoughts on the arguments

Yes or No?

In Salford, we’re having a referendum on 26th January to decide whether we should have an elected mayor, to replace the current ceremonial mayor role, and the leader of the council role. The referendum was triggered after a petition was handed into Salford City Council in July 2011, which had enough signatories to cause a referendum to be called. The question that we are to respond to is:

Should the electors for the area of Salford elect a Mayor who, with a Cabinet, will be in charge of our local services and lead Salford City Council?

As I’m now in possession of leaflets from both the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ campaigns, I thought I’d have a quick look at some of the arguments both sides have put forward, ahead of the vote next week.

Disclaimer: These are just my thoughts & opinions on the two arguments, and I am in no way affiliated with either group, nor a member of any political party.
